Most of the ferro-alloys e.g. Ferro-silicon, Ferro-manganese, Silico-manganese, Ferro-chrome, Charge Chrome, etc. are produced by smelting process. Smelting of the charged materials are carried out in submerged electric furnaces equipped with transformer of proper ratings.
Ferro-alloys are produced by reducing metals from their oxides contained in ores by using a suitable reductant under conditions created to ensure a high recovery of the valuable elements from the starting materials in a submerged electric arc furnace where heat required for high temperature reactions to take place is provided by electric arc and resistance of the raw materials. Electric arc is generated by passing current through three numbers of soderberg electrodes which goes beneath the charge level. Fluxes are added to the charge material to have required composition of the slag as needed by the process.
